Georgia Leads the Nation in Girls Flag Football - DeKalb County Girls Flag Football Is on the Rise

Girls flag football is gaining serious momentum across Georgia—and DeKalb County is right in the middle of the action. As one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the state, flag football is opening new doors for young women both on and off the field.

Since becoming a GHSA-sanctioned varsity sport in 2020, girls flag football has taken off in DeKalb County Schools. Programs at schools like Lithonia, Druid Hills, ML King, and Arabia Mountain are drawing big turnouts and even bigger crowds. Coaches are seeing more student-athletes not only excelling in competition but also finding leadership and scholarship opportunities along the way.

Thanks to strong support from the Atlanta Falcons and the Arthur M. Blank Foundation; the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), and recent legislative endorsements, girls flag football is now a sanctioned varsity sport across the state. In 2024 and 2025, multiple DeKalb schools advanced deep into the GHSA playoffs, signaling that the county is becoming a real contender statewide. The Falcons have hosted various clinics and showcases—including those at Mercedes-Benz Stadium—that have helped athletes gain exposure to college recruiters.

Even more exciting? Girls flag football will debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. For DeKalb’s young athletes, this means the dream of going from high school standout to Olympic hopeful is now within reach.

 Positive Flag Football highlights include:

  • 300+ Georgia high schools now offer girls flag football

  • GHSA playoffs featured multiple DeKalb programs in 2024–25

  • State championships hosted at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

  • Olympic flag football set for LA 2028 — a goal for the next generation

  • Atlanta Falcons continue to fund equipment, coaching clinics & uniforms

DeKalb County girls are proving they belong in the spotlight. With growing programs, championship potential, and Olympic dreams ahead, the future of flag football here is brighter than ever.
